apabiz – an institution in the fight against the extreme right

Right-wing extremist crimes are on the rise again – from mobbing to acts of violence. The anti-fascist press archive and education center (apabiz), founded in 1991, knows all about this. It is the most comprehensive, freely accessible specialist archive of materials on the extreme right in Germany since 1945 and is aimed at anyone who is involved with the extreme right on an activist, civil society or academic level or is threatened by it. However, the apabiz not only provides support with research, but also carries out political education work.

Strategically securing a continued existence

apabiz commissioned flmh with the campaign for its 30th anniversary. In a kick-off workshop, the campaign goal crystallised: the continued existence of apabiz independent of state institutions. This is essential in order to be able to continue the anti-fascist work in the coming decades unaffected by political upheavals. With the help of the campaign, 200 new permanent donors were to be recruited and the joint successes of 30 years of work recapitulated.

#AufDauer – also in video format

Based on the workshop, flmh developed the campaign idea #AufDauer (#InTheLongRun) – to allude to the archive work, the continued existence of the apabiz, as well as the permanent danger of right-wing extremism. The core of the campaign consists of seven videos produced by flmh. In them, people associated with apabiz talk about their key experiences that inspired their anti-fascist commitment and their personal experiences with the extreme right-wing scene. They emphasise the importance of apabiz and call for permanent donations.

A campaign with lots of prominent support

The protagonists included filmmaker Mo Asumang, musician Danger Dan and journalist Arne Semsrott. The videos were bundled and published on a microsite designed and programmed by flmh, the primary aim of which was to motivate people to make permanent donations. The microsite and videos were promoted with the help of a six-week Twitter campaign, which primarily involved apabiz’s many partners and allies. The eye-catching campaign design by flmh and the central theme #AufDauer provided a common thread across all elements of the anniversary campaign.
