gegenuns.de – Making Racist Violence Visible Online

Racist, right-wing, and antisemitic violence are not isolated incidents but an everyday reality in Germany. Victims have been issuing warnings for decades. Yet, their stories are still too rarely heard, and their experiences marginalised. However, for a democratic and solidary society, it is indispensable to document and make visible racist, right-wing, and antisemitic violence – while centering the perspectives of those affected.

This is precisely what VBRG, the Verband der Beratungsstellen für Betroffene rechter, rassistischer und antisemitischer Gewalt e.V. (Association of Counseling Centers for Victims of Right-Wing, Racist, and Antisemitic Violence) and the victim counseling service “Support” of RAA Sachsen e.V. are doing. For them, flmh created the web documentary “Gegen uns” (Against Us). This documentary tells the story of racist violence in Germany from the perspective of the victims – starting with Jorge Gomondai, the first known fatality of racist violence in Saxony after reunification.

The web documentary is designed as a modular system: cases can be continuously added, gradually building a comprehensive archive that connects personal stories with political context.

For “Gegen uns,” flmh developed and designed a website based on a modular WordPress structure that combines storytelling and multimedia content. This enables a vivid, dramatically structured narrative that conveys both journalistic precision and empathy. Infographics and visual accents highlight central facts, while intuitive navigation quickly guides users to the desired content.

For its combination of journalistic standards, political relevance, and design clarity, “Gegen uns” was awarded the Grimme Online Award in 2021.

Additionally, flmh developed a central website for the VBRG, which is aimed at journalists, politicians, and other multipliers on the one hand, and serves as a point of contact for member organisations on the other.
