Political struggles that resonate to this day

Gender equality, sexual self-determination, and the recognition of queer perspectives are the results of decades of struggles that continue to have an impact in current debates on reproductive rights, anti-discrimination, decolonisation, and queer self-determination. This is where the “Feminist History Walk” by the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (Rosa Luxemburg Foundation) comes in.

Resistance, rights, change – experienced playfully

The “Feminist History Walk” is a set of 64 cards that can be used to playfully explore feminist history and the present day. By guessing and arranging the cards together, a timeline is created that shows on whose shoulders we stand today – from suffrage struggles to decolonisation to liberal abortion laws and modern sexual criminal law. The focus is on women and queers who have radically shaped their time because they fundamentally questioned power relations. The Walk does not require any in-depth prior knowledge and is aimed at people in educational work, politically engaged people and anyone interested in feminist theory and practice.

Design for dialogue and debate

As a commissioned partner, flmh advised the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung on the design and implementation, as well as at the end of the editorial process. Above all, flmh designed the cards, brochures, posters, and packaging, defining a design that combines learning material, playfulness, and political stance. Image research and editing were also handled by flmh.
The collage-like cover design was chosen to bring together individuals from different eras and contexts. The set’s design combines a modern layout with subtle retro references: for example, through clear typography combined with design elements such as color blocks, graphic frames, and card formats reminiscent of classic learning or playing cards. At the same time, the design is not nostalgically stagnant but shows that history is brought into the here and now – and that feminist struggles are far from over. The visual language appears fresh, clear, and accessible. The result is an aesthetically unique, clearly structured set that encourages exchange, debate, and collective learning. In addition, flmh accompanied the production phase and ensured high-quality, durable implementation.
